- | /\ \ / If you can't wait for the post and have a credit/debit
- |-- /__\ X card you can fax your order to us on 0181 488 0487.
- | / \ / \ It's best if you use the !Order program to create your

-
- This section contains information about APDL and instructions for
- ordering. You may not to wish to bother to read it all, but it's best if
- you do. You should at least read everything up to the line of &'s if you
- want your order to be processed quickly and without error.
-
- Most material in the catalogue is Copyrighted by the Authors and APDL
- makes no claim upon it. However the catalogue, compilations, all
- descriptive and other text, except where taken from the Authors own
- descriptions, is Copyright APDL and may not be used by any other persons
- or organisations except for descriptive or promotional purposes when
- referring to APDL discs and compilations.
-
- ***********************************************************************
- APDL offers absolutely no warranty or guarantee as to fitness for
- purpose with any of the software provided. All PD and Shareware is
- supplied without charge, the fee paid to APDL is for the media,
- carriage, and general costs and overheads. Warranty is therefore
- limited to the media ONLY. Any faulty DISCS will be replaced. While
- we will try to help with problems you are normally advised to contact
- the Author directly. Descriptions of programs are normally taken from
- those supplied by the Author, and APDL cannot be held responsible for
- any inaccuracies or misrepresentations.
- ***********************************************************************
-
- In order to avoid catalogue files becoming too large it is broken into
- several sections. These are described more fully in the file 'Index' but
- briefly they are -
-
- APDL_FAQ - 'Frequently Asked Questions' about APDL and
- PD/Shareware in general. If you have problems look here
- Main Cat - Applications, utilities, 'useful' programs etc
- DTP Cat - Clip art (Draw, Sprite and Artworks), fonts, and other
- DTP files
- Games Cat - Games and 'sillies', including educational games
- Commercial- Commercial software including some low cost
- mainstream games and programs, David Pilling discs
- Smart DTP, etc and demo versions of commercial software
- CDs/Books - APDL CDs and other low cost/good value CDs plus some of
- the Dabs Press books at very low prices
- Demo/Mags - Disc Magazines and 'Demo' programs, graphics demo's, etc.
- Graphics - All types of pictures. As well as Spritefiles there are
- GIF, TIFF, IFF, JPEG and other 'foreign' formats.
- PC + PB - PC programs to be run under the PC emulator and
- programs for the Pocket Book computer
- Careware - 'Archive' magazine Careware discs - proceeds go to charity
- Indiv Cat - Individual programs, Games and Demos
- Sounds Cat- Tracker, Digital Symphony and Maestro tunes plus Coconizer
- and Sound Samples
- FLI Movies- FLI format 'movie' files
- GIF pics - GIF and JPEG pictures sold individually
- Literature- Discs and individual files of various PD texts
- including many classical novels, Shakespeare, etc.
- For Sale - Secondhand hardware and software for sale or wanted
- PC List - An archive with files containing lists of 1000's of PC PD
- and Shareware programs sold VERY CHEAPLY in .ZIP format
- In the 'Hardware' archive -
- HardDiscs - Hard disc drives and interfaces including Syquest drives
- CD Drives - Various CD ROM drives and low cost APDL packages
- RiscPC RAM- Low cost SIMM RAM, part exchange deals available too
-
- The programs on most discs are compressed using ArcFS. Where space
- permits a copy of the Read Only version of ArcFS is provided on the disc
- but quite often there isn't room, so you may need to use the copy from
- the Catalogue disc. If you see 'blank', untyped, files when you look at
- a disc and there isn't a copy of ArcFS on it then they are probably
- ArcFS archives, so load the copy from your Catalogue disc and try again.
-
- Although APDL has taken over DataStream and Arch Angel most of the discs
- previously supplied by these libraries are still available. please see
- the relevant files in the 'Read me 2' archive for details.
-
- -+-+- PRICES -+-+-
-
- U.K. Discs are £1.50 each. Most discs ordered counts as one 'point'
- towards Bonus Discs. For every FIVE points you collect you get one
- bonus disc of your choice FREE.
-
- Europe Within European Postal Area £1.50 per disc but you need to collect
- TEN Bonus Points for each free disc because of the extra postage
-
- Outside Still £1.50 per disc but with a surcharge of £1.00 per order.
- Europe Sorry no Bonus Points because of extra postal charges.
- DO NOT deduct VAT, because although it is not charged it
- approximates to the additional postal charges outside Europe,
- so the VAT component becomes the extra postage.
-
-
- Orders are normally sent by First Class post or Air Mail and are usually
- dispatched the same day they are received. Unless stated otherwise with
- specific items post and packing is INCLUDED in all prices.
-
- If you are ordering on behalf of a school or college please see the section
- 'Schools and Colleges' first.
-
- Please make cheques or Postal Orders payable to APDL. Payment in Pounds
- Sterling drawn on a U.K. bank, Sterling Eurocheque, Visa or Debit card.
- Outside Europe add £1.00 to total order price.
-
- We can accept payment by Visa, Debit or Switch cards. If you wish to use
- a card be sure the number and expiry date are correct and legible. If
- you use the !Order program this will allow you to enter your credit card
- details in the 'Name and Address' window. When you print out your order
- you MUST then SIGN IT. Otherwise it will be returned to you. We will not
- process credit card orders which are unsigned. If you send your order on
- disc you must enclose a short, signed, note giving the number and
- instructing us to debit your card. No orders for payment by credit card
- will be accepted without signed authorisation. Unless by prior
- arrangement the delivery Name and Address MUST be the cardholder.
-
- IMPORTANT - We may have to impose a surcharge on credit card orders. The
- bank take 5% commission, and although we can absorb this on most items it
- is not always possible. We therefore reserve the right to add 2½% to
- credit card sales, although we stress that this will not be on on
- 'normal' discs and catalogue items, and should apply only to high value,
- low profit items like hard discs. If in doubt please phone first
-
- We can accept cheques drawn on a MAJOR foreign bank in a MAJOR currency
- (French or Swiss Franc, Mark, etc.) but there is a surcharge of £2 per
- order. Sorry about this but the bank charges £4 for foreign cheques so I
- must pass part of this charge on. Please bear in mind currency fluctuations
- if payment is not in Sterling.
-
- We normally operate on a 'cash with order' basis. VAT Receipts will ONLY
- be given if requested. If you want to be invoiced this is possible but
- UNLESS BY PRIOR AGREEMENT bonus discs will NOT be given owing to the
- extra paperwork involved. There is also a MINIMUM ORDER VALUE of £5.00
- if payment is not included with the order.
-
- *** We reserve the right to refuse any order without explanation ***

- \ / /\ | APDL is registered for VAT but all prices include
- \ / /__\ | VAT at 17.5%. As 99% of our customers are not VAT
- \/ / \ | registered they can simply ignore the whole thing.
- If you are ordering on behalf of a company that is
- VAT registered and want a proper VAT invoice you MUST ask for it WHEN
- YOU ORDER. If you are ordering from outside the UK but within the EC you
- must still pay VAT at the UK rate - so don't deduct anything. If you are
- ordering from outside the EC then the VAT element will become the
- additional postage. This will be roughly correct for almost everything we
- supply except very high value items like hard discs. If you are a school
- or charity or other VAT exempt purchaser then read the section 'Schools
- and Colleges' BEFORE you send us any order with VAT deducted.

-
- You will find a program called !Order on the catalogue disc. This is
- designed to make it easier for you to order discs. You can choose almost
- anything we sell with a mouse click and it will work out the prices,
- calculate all your Bonus points, and even print out your order.
-
- Most orders are despatched by first class post within 24 hours of
- receipt, normally on the same day. Orders compiled using the !Order,
- !GIForder or !PCorder programs (whether printed or sent as a text file
- on disc) are dealt with FIRST because they are quickest and easiest to
- handle. Hand written orders for GIF or PC files always get left until
- last, so if you do want some of these and don't have a printer send your
- order on disc - you'll get it returned to you much faster.
-
- Sometimes packets do go astray in the post. It can be the fault of the
- Post office but experience shows that it's more likely to be because it
- was wrongly addressed. PLEASE make sure your address is correct and, if
- it's a handwritten order, that it's CLEARLY LEGIBLE. I often have to
- take letters to my local sorting office and ask for their help in
- deciphering an address. In fact, we sometimes get envelopes containing
- an order with no address at all, or even just coins and nothing else!
-
- If you use the !Order program you will see that your name and address is
- repeated at the bottom of the order. This is used as a label to minimise
- the possibility of a mistake, so please don't 'edit it out' before you
- print your order - it's there for a purpose.
-

-
- A brief explanation of the APDL Bonus Point system. It reduces our
- postal costs if you send one large order rather than several small ones
- so this is designed to keep prices down for people who are ordering
- several discs at once. When you make up your order each item will give
- you a certain number of points. For every FIVE points you collect (TEN
- for European orders) you get ONE FREE DISC. (This means any 'normal'
- disc priced at £1.50.)
-
- All 'normal' catalogue discs count as ONE POINT so the number of points
- isn't shown as it will always be one. Wherever a different number of points
- is awarded this will be shown, so look carefully or you might miss out!
-
- Effectively this is ONE FREE disc for every FIVE ordered (ten in Europe).
- This means you get six discs for £7.50 which works out at £1.25 per disc.
-
- On some multi-disc sets the number of Bonus points awarded for 800K and
- 1.6Mb versions is different. This is because it is obviously cheaper for
- us to send the hi density version and it lets us charge the same price
- for each. This will be shown as (1/2 Bonus points) which would mean 1
- point for the 800K version, 2 for the 1.6Mb.
-
- You can't 'save up' Bonus Points from one order and add them to the next.
-
- I'm sorry but no Bonus Discs for orders outside Europe or where payment is
- not included with the order as in these cases costs are higher.

- For an annual fee of only £10 a disc of the latest PD/Shareware PLUS the
- APDL catalogue will be sent to you on the first Saturday of each even month
- (June, August etc.). This is an excellent way of keeping up to date with the
- ever expanding APDL library. Due to additional postage costs the charge for
- customers outside the UK is £12.
-
- This can be either two 800K discs, one of which will be largely filled by
- the catalogue, or a single 1.6Mb disc. In either case the price is the same
- but please specify whether you want the DD or HD version when ordering.

-
- A catalogue disc normally costs £1. To ensure you have the latest version
- enclose your old catalogue with your order and it will be updated WITHOUT
- CHARGE (UK only). Alternatively a new catalogue WITH AN ORDER costs only
- 50p (UK only, 60p elsewhere).
-
- Please make sure you protect your catalogue disc properly if you return it
- for updating, don't just drop it into an ordinary envelope. Ideally re-use
- an old 'jiffy' bag, but if you threw the last one away (silly!) wrap the
- disc securely (even newspaper will do) to protect it. Unprotected discs
- in ordinary envelopes often get damaged by Post Office sorting machinery
-

-
- You will notice the catalogues are plain text files. No fancy graphics
- or animations. This is because they change and are added to all the time
- and may be updated two or three times a week. It isn't possible to keep
- them up to date with fancy packaging. For the same reason we don't offer
- a printed catalogue. By the time it was printed it would be obsolete!
-
- Most customers prefer it this way. As everyone has !Edit it's simple to just
- browse or find anything you want with Edit's 'Find' facility. If you wish to
- print out a part or all of the catalogue you can easily do so.

-
- There are three major versions of RISC-OS in circulation so there are
- sometimes compatibility problems. As an indication the character which
- normally follows each program name is used as a 'code' to indicate
- RiscOS 3.1 (and normally 3.0) compatibility.
-
- - Not sure or untried
- = Works OK with both
- + RiscOS 2 program, works with RiscOS 3 but minor problems
- * RiscOS 2 only
- : RiscOS 3 only
-
- These codes were introduces when RO-3 appeared and so they were mainly
- intended to indicate which of the older program would NOT work with
- RO-3. As we now have the Risc PC as well there is also RISC-OS 3.5/3.6
- to consider. RO2 compatibility is no longer checked as this OS has now
- been declared obsolete. Therefore the following two new codes are used -
-
- ~ Will NOT work on the Risc PC
- ^ Works OK on the Risc PC
-
- I may use two characters in common where this is appropriate, eg. =^
- would mean that the program is RO2, RO3 and RiscPC compatible, :~ would
- means RO3 only, won't work on RiscPC or RO2.
-
- These are offered as a GUIDE ONLY. At this point the majority of older
- programs have not been checked on the RiscPC, so the fact that no
- indication is given does not mean that they do or don't work. Most well
- written applications are perfectly OK.

- Discs are often updated with later versions of programs. If you want
- your copy updated return the ORIGINAL disc(s) plus 40p per disc. The 40p
- charge also applies if you want your Catalogue disc updated although
- this will be done without charge IF YOU ARE ORDERING OTHER DISCS AT THE
- SAME TIME. This price is based on the understanding that the original
- disc is returned IN GOOD CONDITION. Don't just throw it in a normal
- envelope and hope that it survives the journey. If possible re-use one
- of our padded envelopes or wrap the disc(s) in some 'bubble' plastic or

-
- We are happy to deal with schools and colleges and have many among our
- customers. Our prices are based on a 'cash with order' system to
- minimise paperwork overhead.
-
- There is a MINIMUM ORDER of £5 if you do not send payment with your order.
- Invoices are enclosed with the goods. Payment in full MUST be received
- within THIRTY DAYS. At the end of this time and each thirty days thereafter
- a reminder will be sent and the cost of this will be added to your original
- invoice at £4 per reminder. Once a reminder has been sent any outstanding
- amount will attract interest at 2% per month or any part of a month. If
- payment is not received within thirty days any concessionairy bonus discs
- sent with your order will be cancelled and charged at the normal rate.
-
- If you want to deal with us and would like Bonus discs ensure your Accounts
- Department settles QUICKLY. Please remember the minimum order is £5 and NO
- BONUS DISCS unless payment is included with the order or we have agreed you
- can have Bonus discs without prepayment. A simple alternative is to pay with
- a personal cheque and recover the (usually small) amount from petty cash.
-
- If you wish to order discs regularly from APDL you may be entitled to open
- an account. To use this system you must be a state supported or other
- recognised school or college and subscribe to our bi-monthly subscription
- disc. Your account will then be sent with the disc. This allows us to keep
- accounting overheads low. Please ask for details.
-
- VAT DEDUCTION Schools and VAT exempt purchasers read this NOW!!
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Many schools and other institutions are VAT exempt purchasers and can
- deduct VAT from their orders. This MAY be possible with APDL but you
- MUST check with us first and PROVIDE PROOF OF YOUR RIGHT TO DO THIS.
-
- Any order sent with VAT deducted but WITHOUT proof of your right to
- deduct the VAT will have VAT added. This is what we are obliged to do by
- Customs & Excise rules. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
-
- With many items that we supply we act only as 'agent' (for example,
- registered versions of Shareware programs), and so the VAT applies only
- to our part of the price and not to the total, so you can't just deduct
- the VAT. You can deduct VAT from the cost of any NEW hard disc or CD. If
- your order is for less than £10 DO NOT deduct VAT because the amount of
- paperwork that we have to do is just too complex for this small amount.
-
-
- o------------------------------o
- | SHAREWARE |
- | If you use it - pay for it |
- o------------------------------o
-
- Most programs in this catalogue are Public Domain, although as most Authors
- retain copyright they should properly be called 'Freeware'.
-
- Some are Shareware, and this is becoming more common and is a development I
- am keen to encourage. Shareware is NOT 'free software'. It is commercial
- software distributed on a 'try before you buy' basis. Software in this
- catagory requires separate payment to the Author as a Registration Fee if
- you make use of it. Often you get additional items or improved versions when
- you Register. Sometimes the payment should be made to a nominated charity
- instead of to the Author and this is often called 'Careware'.
-
- Please play fair with Shareware. Not only is it dishonest to use a Shareware
- program without Registering is it also very short sighted. If Shareware
- Authors don't receive payment for their work they will either stop writing
- programs for the Archimedes and write for PC's instead where users DO send
- money or 'sell out' to commercial software producers. Then you will find
- that a year later you must pay many times the registration fee to buy the
- same thing in a shrink wrapped package.
-

-
- APDL makes no charge for 'PD' programs or other material. The cost of a
- disc is a copying and distribution fee. All material is supplied without
- any warranty or guarantee as to fitness for purpose. Our guarantee is
- limited to the media and any disc with errors which prevents a program
- from being used will be replaced free of charge. We try to ensure that
- programs work and do our best to help with problems but everything is
- supplied 'as is' and the only warranty is that offered by the Author.
- Descriptions are given in good faith but we can often only give a brief
- trial to programs so cannot guarantee accuracy.
-
- Remember APDL is merely the distributor. Most PD and all Shareware programs
- contain the name and address of the Author and while we can often contact
- him/her on your behalf it is normally much better (and quicker) if you
- do so yourself.
-
- Discs are defect free and verified before despatch. However errors can
- appear so if a disc has errors which stop any programs or data from loading
- it will be replaced free of charge if you return it. Don't forget to include
- your name and address!
-
- We make every effort to ensure that programs and other material may be
- freely copied and distributed. However it is often impossible to be certain
- of this, especially where material does not contain an identifying name and
- address. If you see any items in the catalogue which you know may not be
- freely distributed please inform us.
-
- ============================
- ====================== A B O U T A.P.D.L. ==========================
- ============================
-
- Our policy is to offer not the cheapest but the best programs. Wherever
- possible these are obtained direct from the Author so APDL has the latest
- versions. We offer support to programmers because we realise that without
- them there wouldn't be any PD or Shareware. If you are a PD or Shareware
- Author please send your material. If you see any of your programs in our
- catalogue we would be grateful for updates. We give special consideration to
- Authors so it will be worth your while.
-
- We do not boast that we have all the latest demo's (most of which look
- alike) or the latest tunes (many of which seem to be indistinguishable)
- although we do have a substantial collection of both. We often have
- programs which either do not appear in other collections or are
- restricted to only a few libraries.
-
- We try to avoid spending money on flashy adverts - we don't need to. Most of
- our customers have been buying discs from us for a long while and word of
- mouth is the best advertising. They have also learnt that even if a program
- doesn't appear in our catalogue it's still worth asking - either we already
- have it or we will get it.
-
- If you have not heard of APDL before I should point out that it was among
- the very first libraries for the Archimedes, that's why it doesn't have a
- clever name. The fact that it is still flourishing after all these years
- while others have vanished probably says more about the quality of our
- service than anything that I could add.
-
- =====================================
- ================== O V E R 1,0 0 0 D I S C S ======================
- =====================================
-
- Well, we probably do have over 1000 discs, but who's counting?. However,
- it seems to be the latest fashion to say things like this. You will see
- this proud boast proffered by most of the other large libraries. If you
- investigate you will find that a large proportion of these '1000 discs'
- are full of tracker tunes, GIF pictures, etc., and quite often they
- boost the disc count by having two separate catalogues, one for 800K and
- the other for 1.6Mb.
-
- We don't have a single disc of Tracker or Digital Symphony tunes. All of
- these are sold individually. In fact we have over 400 Mb of them, so
- that could increase the disc count by around 500 if we sold them that
- way! We have only a very few discs of foreign format pictures, but once
- again we have lots of GIF pictures listed individually. If we were to
- put all of these on compilation discs then we would probably be able to
- boast 'over 2000 discs' but so what?. If I 'unzipped' all the PC
- programs and put them onto discs I could boast 'over 10,000 discs' but
- it wouldn't mean a thing. There wouldn't be a single extra item in
- stock. We could also double the number of discs in the catalogue by not
- compressing the contents. Most discs are compressed using ArcFS and many
- contain over 1½ megabytes of material when de-arced. Again it would
- sound good but you would get less for your money. Forget the number of
- discs, if it's worth having we've probably got it.
-
-
- =========================================================
- ========= P U B L I C D O M A I N and S H A R E W A R E =========
- =========================================================
-
- Many Archimedes users are uncertain what these terms actually mean so I
- shall explain VERY briefly.
-
- You should appreciate that APDL does NOT sell computer software except
- for the 'commercial' programs. What we do is to distribute other
- people's software and the money you pay is a fee for copying, post and
- packing, the discs etc. plus an overhead to cover the costs of running
- the library. We charge nothing for the actual programs, they aren't ours
- to sell. We try to give help if you have problems but it's best if you
- contact the Author directly.
-
- Public Domain is a precise legal term in the USA where it means that the
- Author has given up ALL rights to program. He has forsworn Copyright and
- placed it 'in the public domain'. There is no direct legal equivalent in
- Britain. Most so-called Public Domain should more accurately be termed
- 'Freeware'. This means the Author retains copyright but permits his/her work
- to be freely copied and used subject to certain conditions. Normally these
- are that the name and copyright message must be retained, the program must
- not be altered, it must always be supplied intact and it must not be used
- for financial gain. The very existance of such a message establishes
- Copyright and negates any 'this is public domain' statement. For obvious
- reasons once a program is actually in the public domain no-one has any
- rights over it, INCLUDING THE AUTHOR.
-
- Shareware is commercial software. It is Copyright but permission is given
- for it to be freely copied and distributed. If you acquire a copy of the
- program you are entitled to use it for a trial period, normally thirty days.
- If you make use of it after this time you are obliged to 'register'. This
- means sending a 'registration fee' to the Author. Details of how to do this
- and what benefits it brings will be contained somewhere within the program's
- instructions. Using a Shareware program outside of the trial period or
- conditions is software piracy. It is an offense, both legally and morally,
- exactly the same as using a pirated copy of Impression. The fee you pay to a
- library like APDL for a Shareware program does NOT give you any right to use
- the program. You are not paying for the program, just a distribution fee. If
- you continue to use it you MUST register with the Author.
-
- Please play fair with Shareware Authors. Many Shareware programs are as good
- as commercial packages and as they don't have the huge advertising and
- distribution overhead which makes up the larger part of the price of such
- programs they will cost you a lot less. If you don't pay the Author he/she
- will stop writing Shareware and we will all be losers.
